JESUS RAISES LAZARUS FROM THE DEAD

Gospel of John

The purpose of this gospel, as stated by John himself, is to show that Jesus of Nazareth was Christ, the Son of God, and that believers in him might have eternal life.

The raising of Lazarus is a miracle of Jesus recounted only in the Gospel of John (John 11:1–44) in which Jesus brings Lazarus of Bethany back to life four days after his burial. In John, this is the last of the miracles that Jesus performs before the Passion and his own resurrection.

John 11:1-44

A man named Lazarus was sick and his sister Martha sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” when he  heard this,

Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. It is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it. “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.”

His disciples thought he meant natural sleep but Jesus had been speaking of his death.

Jesus said, “Lazarus is dead, But let us go to him.”

On Jesus arrived, Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord,” if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

Jesus said, “Your brother will rise again.”

Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” she replied, “Yes, Lord,”

Martha went back and called her sister Mary “The Teacher is here, and is asking for you.”

Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed and followed her.

Mary fell at Jesus feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping. The Jews said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”

Jesus asked, “Where have you laid him? they replied. “Come and see, Lord,” Jesus came to the tomb and said “Take away the stone,”

Martha sister of the dead man, said “But, Lord,” by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”

Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”

So they took away the stone.

Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out.

His hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
